아이랜드의 대표적 민요로 시골 목동이 도시로 떠나는 사랑하는
소녀와 헤어지기 안타까워 부르는 이별의 노래였다고 하기도 하고,
전쟁터에 나가는 아들과의 석별의 전을 감당할 길이 없는 아버지의
마음을 담고 있다고도 한다. 아일랜드의 독립을 염원하는 곡이기도 하다. | )
