There once was a King
Who called for the Spring
For his world was
Still covered in snow
But the Spring had not been
For he was wicked and mean
In his winter-fields
Nothing would grow
And when a traveller
Called seeking help at the door
only food and a bed for the night
He ordered his slave
To turn her away

Someone help the girl
She rode through the night
Till she came to the light
Of a humble man's home in the woods,
He brought her inside
By the firelight she died
And he buried her

All the world was snow-white
But when he came to the place
Where she lay
His field was ablaze
With flowers on the grave
Of the girl with April in her eyes

옛날 어느나라에 왕이 있었지요
그의 나라는 계속해서 눈이 녹지 않아
제발 봄이 오게 해달라고 부탁했답니다.
하지만 그 왕은 사악하고 인색했기에
봄은 오지 않았고
그 나라의 차가운 겨울 들판엔
아무 것도 자라지 못했지요
그러다 한 여행자가 와서
단지 하룻밤 묵을 곳과 먹을 것을 구하며
문 앞에서 도움을 요청했답니다
그러자 왕은 하인을 시켜
그 여행자를 쫓아 버렸죠
4월의 눈동자를 가진 소녀를 말예요
오~! 그 소녀는 거친 바람과 눈보라가
휘몰아치는 차가운 겨울 밤을 헤치며
정처없이 나아갔답니다
아, 그녀는 계속해서 말을 달렸어요
누가 그녀를 좀 도와 줬음 좋겠는데...
4월의 눈동자를 가진 그 소녀를 말예요
그녀는 밤새도록 말을 달리다
숲속에 사는 한 초라한 사람의 집에서
비쳐오는 불빛을 찾아 오게 됐지요
그는 그녀를 안으로 데려와
난롯가에 눕혔지만 죽고 말았답니다.
그래 그는 그 소녀를 정성스레 묻어 주었지요.
흰눈에 덮힌 온 세상에
다시 환한 아침이 밝았고
그녀가 잠들어 있는 곳에
그가 다다랐을 때
그의 마당은 4월의 눈동자를 가진
그 소녀의 무덤 위에 꽃들로
만발해 있었어요
오!~ 그 소녀는 거친 바람과 눈보라가
휘몰아치는 차가운 겨울 밤을 헤치며
정처없이 나아갔답니다
아, 그녀는 정처없이 달렸지요
4월의 눈동자를 가진
그 소녀는 결국 이세상을 떠나고 말았답니다.
