Die du so gern in heilgen Nächten feierst,
Und sanft und weich den Gram verschleierst,
Der eine zarte Seele quält,
O Hoffnung! laß durch dich emporgehoben,
Den Dulder ahnen, daß dort oben
Ein Engel seine Tränen zählt!

Wenn, längst verhallt, geliebte Stimmen schweigen;
Wenn unter ausgestorbnen Zweigen
Verödet die Erinnrung sitzt:
Dann nahe dich, wo dein Verlaßner trauert,
Und, von der Mitternacht umschauert,
Sich auf versunkne Urnen stützt.

Und blickt er auf, das Schicksal anzuklagen,
Wenn scheidend über seinen Tagen
Die letzten Strahlen untergehn:
Dann laß ihn um den Rand des Erdentraumes
Das Leuchten eines Wolkensaumes
Von einer nahen Sonne sehn!

 

 

 

 

To Hope 희망에 부쳐

You, who so gladly celebrates on sacred nights
and gently and softly veils the grief
that torments a tender soul,
O Hope! Raised through you,
let the sufferer feel that there above,
an angel counts his tears!

When, long hushed, beloved voices are silenced,
when, underneath dead branches
memory sits desolate,
then come closer to where your forsaken one mourns
and, looking around at midnight,
supports himself against sunken urns.

And if he looks up to accuse fate,
when, departing with his days,
the last rays set:
then permit him to see, at the rim of this earthly dream,
the light of the cloud's hem

Beethoven의 편지에 "J"라 불리웠던 Josephine이 과연 그의
"불멸의 연인" 이었을까 에 대해서는 아직 논란이 많다.

Beethoven은 1799년 Josephine과 동생 Therese를 처음 만났고
그녀들에게 피아노를 가르쳤다.

이 곡, An die Hoffnung을 작곡한 1805년 즈음, Beethoven은
분명 Josephine과 사랑에 빠져 있었는듯 하다.

Beethoven이 Josephine에게 보낸 편지 중 -

And for some time after the feeling of love for you, my adored J --

I have won your heart. Oh, I certainly know what value I ought to attach to this.

Oh, beloved J, it is no desire for the other sex that draws me to you, no, it is just you,
your whole self with all your individual qualities -- this has compelled my regard,

Oh you, you make me hope your heart will long -- beat for me -- Mine can only -- cease
-- to beat for you -- when -- it no longer beats -- Beloved J, I send you all good wishes.
그러나, 1807년 즈음 Josephine의 열정은 식어가고...
 
이를 느낀 Beethoven이 Josphine에게 보낸 편지 -

were really a fact -- that you do not want to see me any more
-- if so -- do be frank -- I certainly deserve that you should be frank with me...
(사실은 더 이상 날 보기를 원치 않음이 아니었던가요.  만약 그렇다면 최소한 내게
솔직은 했었어야지요)

그리고, 그에 대한 Josephine의 회신 -

Or does my friend Beethoven, surely I may call him that, believe that I have changed?
-- Such a doubt would imply to me nothing else but that you yourself are no longer the same.
(나의 친구 베토벤이여, 내가 변했다구요? 그런 의심 자체가 당신이 예전과 더이상
같지 않음을 의미하는 것입니다)

Beethoven은 Josephine의 회신에서 분명한 메세지를 받았고
이후 그녀에게 보낸 편지는 발견되지 않는다.
Josephine은 1821년 나이 42세에 정신적 불안과 가난 속에서 세상을 떠났다.

An die Hoffnung, Op. 32 의 약 10년 후...

Beethoven은 같은 text에 두번째 버젼의 An die Hoffnung (Op. 94)을 썼다.
동생 Karl의 중병으로 Beethoven 자신이 karl과 그의 부인을 경제적으로
책임져야할 어려운 시기였고 따라서 곡은 처음 버젼에 비해 암울한, dramatic한
분위기이다. 또한 text 중 첫 버젼에서 제외한 신의 속성에 대한 질문을
포함시켰다.
