이 곡은 뮤지컬 <포기와 베스(Porgy and Bess)>의 아리아로    
1935년 미국의 대표적인 대중음악 작곡가인 조지 거쉬인            

(George Gershwin)이 만들었습니다.                                         

                                 
가사는 듀보스 헤이워드(Dubose Heyward)가 붙였으며,            

재즈 스탠더드의 하나로 자리잡은 곡입니다.                                   

 

             마일즈 데이비스(Miles Davis)를 비롯하여 많은 뮤지션들이 레코딩했지만,
역시 1957년도에 발표된 엘라 핏츠제랄드(Ella Fitzgerald)와     

루이 암스트롱(Louis Armstrong)의                                            
<Porgy and Bess>에서의 듀엣이 가장 인상적인 것 같습니다.         

 

거쉬인은 우크라이나의 자장가에서 이 곡의 영감을 받았다고...       
 흑인이라는 이유만으로 차별받고 천대받는 암울한 현실이지만,        
                  "아빠는 부자, 엄마는 멋쟁이"라고 불러주면서 아이를 재우는 슬픈 자장가 라고...
