  아일랜드가 배출한 보석 같은 대중가수인 Mary Black(메리 블랙, 1955년생)은 어려서부터 선술집에서 노래하면서 음악경력을 쌓았고 1989년 발표된 ‘No Frontiers’의 성공으로 200만 장의 판매고를 올리며 가까운 영국뿐 아니라 미국과 일본에서까지 인기를 끌게 되었다.

 

  AV 매니아들 사이에서는 새로 산 고급 스피커가 사람 목소리를 얼마나 그대로 (얼마나 아름답게) 살려주는지 테스트하기 위해서 이 노래와 이 앨범을 사용한다고 한다. ‘귀가 아릴 정도로 청아한 목소리’, ‘목숨을 내걸 만한 목소리’, ‘우주에까지 가져가 듣고 싶은 음악’ 평론가들의 평이다. 아틀란티스 호의 우주비행사 진 뉴먼이 우주비행에 가지고 간 앨범으로도 유명하다.

 

 

  그녀의 목소리를 듣노라면 60년대 존 바에즈(Joan Baez, 1941-)나 70년대 제니스 이언(Janis Eddy Fink, 1951-)과 같이 고난의 삶 속에서도 굽히지 않고 언제나 꿋꿋이 일어서는 느낌을 준다.

 

  <Song For Ireland>는 이 노래는 아일랜드 특유의 자연경치, 자유와 평화를 갈망하는 아일랜드인들의 구원의 그리움, 그리고 서로를 사랑하는 그들의 형제자매애와 꿈이 그려져 있고 우수가 짙게 깔려 있다. 언제 들어도, 몇 번이나 들어도 싫증이 나지 않는, 눈물겹도록 아름다운 노래이다. 또한 그 가사에 나오는 아름답고도 긴 ‘Dingle beach’란 곳은 영화 라이안의 처녀(Ryan’s Daughter)의 촬영 장소이기도 하다.
