7080 복고바람과 함께 젊은 층에서도 큰 인기를 끌었던 영화 ‘써니’의 OST인 ‘Sunny’의 원곡자 Boney M.을 아십니까?

그룹 ABBA와 함께 1970~1980년대 전 세계에 걸쳐 폭넓은 인기를 누렸던 Boney M.!

1976년에 결성, Euro Pop과 Disco, Reggae 리듬을 접목시킨 독특한 Disco 음악으로 Disco 의 혁명을 일으켰던

 그룹 Boney M.의 탄생과정은 좀 특이한 것이 사실입니다.

1974년 독일의 프로듀서였던 Frank Farian은 무명 singer들을 기용해 ‘Baby Do You Wanna Bump’라는 곡을

만들어 발표했는데 이 곡은 당시 TV방영 중이던 흑인 수사 물에서 착안한 Boney M.이라는 가상의 그룹 이름으로

발표되고 흑인 그룹의 노래인 것처럼 가장되어 발표되었다고 합니다.

가상 그룹의 노래는 의외의 대성공을 거두며 유럽 전역을 흥분시키기에 이르렀는데
급기야 이름뿐인 그룹 Boney M.의 실체를 보여 달라는 팬들이 늘어나기 시작하였다고 합니다.

이와 같은 팬들의 성화에 못 이긴 Frank Farian은 결국 가상의 그룹이었던 Boney M.을
실제의 그룹으로 만들기 위해 방대한 오디션을 단행하게 되었다고 합니다.

치열한 경쟁을 거쳐 서인도제도 출신의 흑인여성 3명과 남성 1명으로 탄생된 Boney M.은 리드 싱어 Liz Mitchelle을

 중심으로 Carcia Barrett, Bobby Farrell, Maizie Williams로 다져진 최고의 라인업을 보여 주게 됩니다.

이렇게 해서 탄생한 Boney M.은 데뷔하자 마자 발표한 싱글 앨범 ‘daddy Cool’이
공전의 히트를 치게 되고 무려 2년 동안 3,500만장이 판매되는 경이로운 기록을 남기게 되었다고 합니다.

 

연이어 발표한 ‘Sunny’, ‘Ma Baker’, Belfast’는 독일 차트 1위, 영국 차트에서도 상위권을 차지하였으며,
78년에는 ‘Rivers of Babylon’이 영국 차트 1위에 오르면서 5주간 정상을 지키기도 하였답니다.

Boney M.은 70년대에만 전 세계 통산 6천만 장이라는 경이적인 앨범 판매를 기록하였을 뿐만 아니라 기네스 북

 ‘시대를 초월하는 명곡’ 란 에는 두 곡이나 랭크를 시켰고 서구 Pop 아티스트로는 처음으로 금단의 지역인

구 소련에서 초청 공연을 가지기도 한 그룹이었다고 합니다.

Boney M.은 우리나라에도 올드 팬을 중심으로 많은 사랑을 받고 있는 그룹입니다.
