1980년대 중반 'And we dance', 'Day by day'같은 일련의 히트곡들로 미국 본토는 물론 우리나라에서도

상당량의 지분을 소유한 5인조 팝록 밴드 후터스(Hooters)는 1978년 필라델피아에서 결성되었다.

 

이들은 당시 팝음악의 큰 흐름이었던 뉴웨이브나 신스팝 위주의 대중 음악을 지양하고 기타 중심의 정통적인 팝록을

지향점으로 정했다.

롭 하이맨(Rob Hyman/보컬, 키보드), 에릭 바질리안(Eric Bazilian/보컬, 기타), 존 릴리(John Lilley/기타),

롭 밀러(Rob Miller/베이스), 데이비드 우오시키넨(David Uosikkinen/드럼) 이렇게 다섯 명중에서 팀의 버팀목 역할을 했던 하이맨과 바질리안은 1980년대 중반 밴드가 최상의 절정기를 맞이하기 전에는 작곡가와 세션 뮤지션으로

나름의 명성을 구가하던 인물들이었다.

 

하이맨의 대표작은 신디 로퍼(Cyndi Lauper)와 공동으로 작곡한 그녀의 명곡 'Time after time'이다.

이 자신감을 바탕으로 후터스는 1985년 2집 <Nervous Night>을 공개해 대박을 터뜨렸다. 'And we dance(21위)',

'Day by day(18위)', 'Where do the children go?(38위)'가 40위안에 들면서 인기의 불꽃에 기름을 부으며

곧 골드 레코드를 획득했다.

 

유수의 음악 전문 잡지나 평론가들은 주저 없이 1985년을 빛낸 LP로 <Nervous Night>을 꼽았다.

전자 음악이 난무하던 시절, 그들은 록과 포크, 그리고 흥겨운 록이 어우러진 후터스의 음악으로부터 순수 록큰롤에 대한

진정성을 발견한 것이다.

이 음반에 대한 평가를 함축하는 키워드는 '신선함'이다.

 

3번째 작품 <One Way Home>은 전작만큼의 반향을 일으키지는 못했지만 'Satellite(61위)', 'Johnny B(61위)'같은 싱글들의 분투로 이 레코드에도 금띠를 둘렀다.

 

그러나1989년의 <Zig Zag>는 이전의 화려한 성공과 인기를 한꺼번에 말아먹는 결과를 초래했다.

 1980년대 후반에나타난 포크 무브먼트와 룻츠 사운드의 번창함으로 인해 이들의 음악은 더 이상 새롭게 들리지 않았다. 그리고는 우리의 기억에서 가물가물해졌다.

 

그러나 그들은 후터스의 이름이 아닌 작곡가의 신분으로 돌아왔다.

 1990년대 여성 싱어 송라이터 소피 B. 호킨스(Sophie B. Hawkins)의 데뷔 앨범에서 에릭 바질리안의 이름을

발견할 수 있었고, 1995년에는 그래미에도 여러 부문 노미네이트 된 조안 오스본(Joan Osbourne)의 앨범 <Relish>을 위해 에릭 바질리안과 롭 하이맨이 많은 곡들을 작곡해 줌으로써 우리들에게 다시 한번 후터스의 기억을 상기시켰다.
