채 스무살이 안된 무명시인 키쓰 리드(Keith Reid)는

 1966년 어느 날 갓 스무살이 넘은 한 다리 건너 친구며

 

                            가수인 개리 브루커(Gary Brooker)에게 시를 하나 끌적거려 건네 준다.

 그들이 6개월 후 우연히 마주쳤을 땐                             

 

        개리가 특유의 우울하면서도 구성진 목소리로 가수활동하던

The Paramounts가 해체의 길을 걷는 중이었고,      

 

 다시 6개월 후 그들은 새로운 밴드를 염두에 둔채         

그 시를 가사로 노래를 만들고 있었다.                         

 

 

 

                 A Whiter Shade of Pale..... 제목만 들어도 가슴이 울렁거리는

 이 노래는 가수 겸 피아니스트 Gary Brooker,             

 

          전자오르간(Hammond Organ) 연주자 Matthew Fisher, 

            그리고 아무런 음악적 재능이 없는 풋내기 시인 Keith Reid의  

                      독특한 결합을 주축으로 한 영국밴드 프로콜 하럼(Procol Harum)이

 

  1967년 5월 12일 발표한 후 전세계에 걸쳐                  

       지금까지 40년 동안 이미자의 동백아가씨처럼 헤일 수 없이

  수 많은 밤 지구인의 심금을 울려준 역대 Rock 음악사상

 최고의 고전이다.                                                        

 

         곡 전체를 통해 은은하게 울려퍼지는 전자오르간 전주, 반주,

        독주는 JSB(Johann Sebastian Bach)회사의 히트상품인

    발기부전치료제 '일나그라(Sleepers, Awake!)'           

 

    모델명 칸타타 BWV140과 교육부 지정 스승의 날 헌정곡

'G선상의 아리아(Air on a G String)' 영향으로           

     섹쉬하면서도 교과서적인 분위기를 풍긴다.                      

 

                         프로그레시브 Rock은 물론 교향곡풍 Rock음악(Symphonic Rock)의

 결정적 초석이 된 이 곡은 지난 70년 간                         

 

       영국에서 레코드로 가장 많이 들려진 노래며, 범세계적으로

    800여 유무명가수들과 많은 관현악단들까지 앞다퉈       

재취입한 것으로도 유명하다.

          누가 카수고 누가 시인인지 알아맞춰 보삼! (정답은 맨 아래) 

 

 밴드 이름에 얽힌 초창기 일화가 제법 웃겨준다.           

 하루는 매니저가 밴드 대표가수 개리한테 전화를 했다.

 

 

매니저: 드뎌 나가 느그덜 밴드 이름 찾았쓰!               

개리: 그랴, 몬데?                                                       

매니저: Procul Harum. (친구의 냐옹이 이름)           

               개리: Procol Harum이라고라? 키야~ 발음이 멋지고 근사하다.

바로 우리 이미지 그 자체네여.                                    

 

        이리하야 밴드 Procul Harum이 아닌 Procol Harum 탄생.

 

Procul은 라틴어로 Far away from,                         

              그리고 Harum은 여성명사 복수형으로 These things란 뜻인데

                   Procul 뒤엔 탈격명사가 와야 하므로 Harum이 아닌 His를 써서    

Procul His해야 문법에 맞는다.                                   

 

                    그런데 Procul Harum과 Procul His사이 어감이 너무나 다른 거다.

그래서 못먹어도 Go! Procol Harum되겠다.              

 

            그 뜻은 냥이 이름치곤 너무나도 거창한 '이것들을 초월하여'로

이름만 들으면 쥔보담 더 똑똑할 것 같다.                     

 

 

'Shade'라 하면 검은색에 얼마나 접근했나로                

   색의 어두운 정도를 말하는 거다.                                    

 

그런 의미에서'창백함의 더 짙은                                  

                 하얀색(A Whiter Shade of Pale)'이란 헷갈리는 표현의 제목은

 

        원어민들에게뭔가 멋진 표현이란 기분이 들고 또 슬픈 미소,

       텅 빈 충만, 영원한 순간과 같이 걍 듣기에 �여주는 것이다.

  

게다가 수수께끼같은 가사는 그동안 끊임없이             

수 많은 추측과 억측을 불러일으켰지만 지금까지         

이 노래 가사가 정확히 뭘 뜻하는지 아무도 모른다.     

.

 

 

         죤 레논도 이 노랠 무지 좋아해서 한 번 듣는 모드에 들어가면

몇시간 동안 수십번씩 반복해서 들었다고 한다.
