Eric Clapton은 1945년 영국에서 태어나 10대 시절부터 기타를 연주하기 시작했다.

20대 초반에 Metropolice Blues Quartet에 가입했는데, 그 밴드가 Yardbirds로 이름이

바뀌었다.

 

 Yardbirds는 Jeff Beck과 Led Zeppelin의 Jimmy Page 등 탁월한 기타리스트를

배출한 명 밴드였다(Led Zeppelin으로 개명하기 전의 Jimmy Page의 새 밴드 이름은

New Yardbirds였다).

 

이 밴드에서 약 2년간 활동한 그는 Jeff Beck에게 기타 자리를 넘겨주고 본격적인 Blues

기타리스트로서 경력을 쌓아가기 시작한다.

그는 John Mayall이 이끄는 Blues Breakes에 가입하여 John Mayall's Blues Breakers

With Eric Clapton을 발표했다.

 

John Mayall과 단 한 장의 앨범을 만든 그는 '66년에 전설적인 Hard Rock 밴드 Cream을

드러머 Ginger Baker와 베이시스트 Jack Bruce 등과 결성한다.

Sunshine of your love, White room 등의 히트곡을 발표한 Cream은 편집 앨범을 포함

서너 장의 앨범을 발표한다.

 

그리고 에릭 클랩튼은 Ginger Baker와 Steve Winwood, Rick Grech 등과 Blind Faith를

결성해 셀프 타이틀 데뷔 앨범을 발표하고는 1년만에 해체했다.

 

이후 에릭 클랩튼은 '70년에 첫 솔로 앨범 Eric Clapton을 발표하고는, Allman Brothers의 Duane Allman 등과 함께 Derek And The Dominos를 결성해 Layla와 Jimmy Hendrix의 Little wing을 히트시켰다.

하지만 이 밴드를 끝으로 Clapton은 마약에 빠지게 되었다.

 

그러나 '74년에 마약으로 인한 슬럼프에서 벗어나 마이애미의 그가 머물렀던 집 주소를

앨범 타이틀로 한 461 Ocean Boulevard을 발표했다.

 

이 작품은 앨범 차트에서 4주간 1위를 했고, 'Give me strength', Bop Marley의 'I shot the sheriff',

'Motherless children', 'Let it grow' 등을 히트시켰다.

 

이후 There's one in Every Crowd, E.C. Was Here, No Reason to Cry 등이 인기를 얻었으며,

 '77년에는 명반 Slow Hand를 발표해 'Lay down Sally'와 'Wonderful tonight' 등을

히트시켰다. 이 앨범은 에릭 클랩튼에게 "슬로 핸드"라는 별명을 선사기도 했다.

 

'78년에는 Backless를 발표하는데 여기서 잔잔한 발라드 'Promise'가 Top10을 차지하기도

했다. '80년 일본 무도관 공연 실황인 Just one Night을 통해 'Tulsa time'과 'Cocaine' 등을 소개했고,

 '81년 Another Ticket에서는 'I can't stand it'을 히트시켰다. 이 앨범을 끝으로

그는 소속사를 RSO에서 Warner Bros.로 옮기는데, 이 때까지의 솔로 히트곡들을 모은

베스트 앨범이 'the Best of Eric Clapton으로 발매되기도 했다.

 

소속사를 옮겨 처음으로 발표한 앨범은 '83년 Money and Cigarettes이었다.

이후 Behind The Sun, August 등도 성공을 거두었지만, Clapton의 활동에 특이한 점은

 

영화음악에의 참여에 있을 것이다. 그는 영화 "Back to the Future"의 사운드 트랙에도

참여하였고, "The Color of Money"의 주제곡 'The Gift'가 인기를 끌었으며,

또 "Homeboy" 등에도 참여하였다.

 

그리고 1992년 영화 "Rush"에서의 'Tears in Heaven'은 세계적인 인기를 얻었다.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

“프레디 킹에서 시작하여 B.B.킹으로 이어지는 스타일들을 익히며 내 연주를 다듬어왔다.

 때문에 지금까지도 그들의 체취가 내 연주에서 숨쉬고 있는지도 모른다.”

에릭 클랩튼은 1944년 3월 30일 영국 서리주 리플리에서 태어났다. 15살 때 할아버지로부터

 어쿠스틱 기타를 선물 받아 기타를 시작한 그는 척 베리, 보 디들리, 블라인드 레몬 제퍼슨,

로버트 존슨, 스킵 제임스 등을 들으며 기타를 익혔다.

그는 한때 킹스턴 아트 스쿨에 다니면서 디자이너를 꿈꾸었으나 기타가 더 재미있어 63년 9월

 루스터스(Roosters)에 가입하였다.

 

그후 케이시 존스&더 엔지니어즈(Casey Jones&The Engineers)를 거쳐 야드버즈에 가입해 약 1년반 정도 활동하다

존 메이욜 블루스브레이커스(John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers)에 가입해 블루스 기타리스트로서의 지위를 확고히 했다.

66년 7월에는 슈퍼 록트리오 크림(Cream)을 결성해 'Sunshine on Your Love', 'White Room', 'Spoonful' 등

 많은 명곡을 발표하였다. 그러나 크림도 오래가지 못하고 68년 11월 앨버트 홀에서의 고별공연을 끝으로 해산하고 만다.

이후 그는 스티브 윈우드, 릭 그레치 등과 함께 블라인드 페이쓰(Blind Faith)를 결성해 셀프 타이틀의 데뷔앨범을

발표하고 록 계의 비상한 주목을 받지만 이 그룹도 얼마가지 못해 해산되었다.

 

블라인드 페이쓰 후에도 델라니&보니, 레온 러셀, 스티브 스틸스, 조지 해리슨 등과 함께 음악을 하다가

70년 데렉 & 더 도미노스(Derek & The Dominos)를 조직해 [Layla & The Other Assorted Love Songs]라는

 명반을 발표했다.

 

특히 이 앨범에는 듀언 올맨 등이 함께 해 에릭 클랩튼과 트윈 슬라이드 기타 연주를 들려주어 크게 주목받은 바 있다.

그러나 72년에 밴드는 해체되고 이후부터 그는 약물 중독으로 침체기를 보내다가 놀라운 의지력으로 다시 음악을

 시작하였다. 이렇게 해서 74년 [461 Ocean Boulevard]란 앨범으로 재기에 성공하고, 계속해서 그는 여러 장의

솔로앨범을 발표했다. 'Lay Down Sally', 'Wonderful Tonight' 등은 당시 그의 인기를 대변해주는 곡들이다.

 

81년 3월엔 [Another Ticket]이 빅 히트를 장식하고, 85년에는 드럼의 필 콜린스와 제프 포카로, 베이스의

 네이던 이스트와 도널드 “덕” 던, 기타의 스티브 루카서 등을 초빙해 [Behind The Sun]을 발표해 화제를 모으기도 했다.

한편 88년에는 에릭 클랩튼의 역사를 집대성한 6장 짜리 앨범 [Crossroads]를 공개했고 90년대로 들어와선 언플러그드 사운드를 세계적으로 유행시켜 어쿠스틱 기타가 주도하는 음악을 빌보드차트 등 유명 히트차트에서 맹위를 떨치게 했다.

 

그리고 'Tears In Heaven' 등과 같은 감미롭고 서정적이며 편안한 멜로디가 담긴 노래들을 발표해 인기 최정상의

 아티스트로서 군림하고 있다.

 

 

에릭 클랩튼은 우선 피킹의 액센트 조절이 뛰어나다.

 곡의 성격에 따라 멜로디에 힘을 넣는 방법이 각기 다른데, 이 피킹 조절이야말로 그만의

 빼어난 리듬감과 특유의 그루브를 창출하는 핵이 되고 있다. 거기에 그의 핑거링은 부드럽고 자연스런 포지션 이동을 통해 섬세하며 아름다운 음을 배열해 간다.

 

 이것은 그의 능란한 초킹과 해머링, 풀링, 슬라이드의 효과적인 쓰임에 의한 것이랄 수 있다. 'Why Does Love To Be So Sad', 'Deserted Cities Of The Heart',

'Double Trouble', 'Lay Down Sally'-이 곡은 특히 초킹의 쓰임을 주목해서 들어보라-등이 그 대표적이며 와와 프레이즈에 의한 다양한 바리에이션 솔로도 'White Room',

 'Tales Of Brave Ulysses', 'Presence Of The Lord' 등에서 들을 수 있다.

이외에 부드러운 멜로디와 음정의 정확함이 돋보이는 다채로운 벤딩 프레이즈와 런주법도 그의 장기인데, 이후 이러한

주법은 70년대의 하드록 기타에까지 막대한 영향을 미쳤다. 뿐만 아니라 'Do What You Like'에서의 도리안 스케일에

기반한 색다른 솔로처럼 실험적인 테마 전개에도 관심을 보인 바 있다.

어쨌든 ‘에릭 클랩튼’이라는 이름은 그 부드럽고 정확한 피킹이 만들어내는 포근하고 화사한 톤과, 노래하는 듯 자연스런

라인, 그리고 독자적인 생명력을 지닌 리듬 등으로 록기타사의 가장 중요한 인물중의 하나로서 기억될 것이다.

Album Review

One strange thing about Eric Clapton's '90s success is that it relied

 almost tirely on covers and new versions of classic hits;

he released no albums of new material between

1989's Journeyman and 1998's Pilgrim.

 

In the decade between the two albums,

he had two new hits ? his moving elegy to his deceased son,

 "Tears in Heaven," and the slick contemporary soul of the Babyface-written

 "Change the World" ?

 

and Pilgrim tries to reach a middle ground between these two extremes,

 balancing tortured lyrics with smooth sonic surfaces.

 

Working with producer Simon Climie, his collaborator on the TDF side project,

 Clapton has created a numbingly calm record that, for all of its lyrical torment,

 displays no emotion whatsoever. Much of the problem lies in the production,

 

 which relies entirely on stiff mechanical drumbeats, gauzy synthesizers,

 and meandering instrumental interludes.

 

These ingredients could result in a good record,

 as "Change the World" demonstrated, but not here,

due to Pilgrim's monotonous production. Unfortunately,

 

Clapton doesn't want to shake things up ?

his singing is startlingly mannered,

even on emotionally turbulent numbers like

 "My Father's Eyes" or "Circus." Even worse,

 

he's content to take a back seat instrumentally,

 playing slight solos and fills as colorless as the electronic backdrops.

 

 The deadened sonics would make Pilgrim a chore even if there were strong

songs on the record, but only a handful of tunes break through the murk.

 

 Considering that Journeyman, his last album of original material,

 was a fine workmanlike effort and that From the Cradle and Unplugged crackled

 with vitality, the blandness of Pilgrim is all the more disappointing.
