A Horse With No Name

 

 

On the first part of the journey

America

 

 

 

   아메리카(America)의 멤버 세 사람은 모두 미국인들이지만, 영국에서 결성된 트리오

   밴드이다.

   1951년에 영국 요오크셔에서 태어난 듀이 버넬(Deway Bunnell)과 1950년에 미국

   플로리다에서 출생한 댄 피크(Dan Peek), 1952년에 미국 텍사스 태생인

   제리 버클리(Gerry Beckley), 이들 모두 영국에서 근무하던 미국 공군 장교의 아들들로, 

   1967년에 런던 소재의 미국인 학교에서 서로 알게 되었다.

 

   평소부터 록 뮤직을 좋아하던 이들은, 아마츄어 록 밴드를 결성하기로 약속하고, 몇 년간

   인근기지촌의 다른 그룹들과 함께 작은클럽 등지에서 연주를 하면서 기량을 연마해 나갔다.

   그러나 1970년에 나이가 가장 많은 댄 피크가 대학 진학을 위해 미국으로 떠났는데,

   댄 피크가 미국으로 건너가므로써 이들 세명의 약속이 무의미해지는가 싶더니 미국으로

   떠났던 댄 피크가 1년도 채 못되어 학업을 중단하고 영국으로 돌아와 다시 모이게 되었다.  

 

   자신이 좋아하는 것은 음악 뿐이라는 결론을 내린 댄 피크는, 학업보다는 직업

   음악인으로서의 활동이 바람직하다고 생각하고, 그때부터 낮에는 돈을 벌고,

 

   밤에는 제리, 듀이와 함께 작은 무대에서 연주를 하면서 자신들을 아메리카(America)라고 

   이름을 붙혔다 1971년에 유명 프로듀서 제프 박스터를 만나면서 레코딩 제작을 할 수

   있었는데, 데뷰 싱글 ＜A Horse With No Name＞을 발표해 순식간에 영국 챠트 정상에

   올라섰고, 무명의 밴드 아메리카는 일약 스타덤에 오를 수 있었다. 

 

1972년에는 이 싱글이 미국에서 발매되어, 그해 3월에는 미국 챠트 넘버 원에 올랐으며

   4월에는 데뷰 앨범 「America」를 발표했다. 

   데뷰 앨범 「America」도 4월 내내 미국의 정상을 차지해 극적인 성공을 누리게 된

   이들은 본거지를 미국으로 옮겨서 자신들의 인기 유지에 온 심혈을 기울였다.

 

   두번째 앨범 「Homecoming」를 발표하고 싱글 ＜Ventura Highway＞를 히트시켰다.  

   1973년 10월에 출반된 앨범 「Hat Trick」는, 자신들이 어른스러운 밴드로 성장한

   모습을 보여 준 사운드로서, 아메리카의 기념비적인 앨범이 되었다.

   1974년 7월에 발표한 네번째 앨범 「Holiday」는 비틀즈의 프로듀서였던 조지 마틴과

   함께 만들었는데, 이 앨범에서는 신세사이저나 브라스, 또는 스트링이 전혀 없는

   월 사운드(Wall Sound)라는 단순한 음의 세계를 보여 준 앨범이었다.

 

   계속해서 조지 마틴과 손잡고 다섯번째 앨범 「Hearts」를 발매하였는데, 이 앨범에서

   싱글 커트된 ＜Sister Golden Hair＞는 국내에서도 70년대 중반에 큰 인기를 누렸던

   곡이다.

   1975년에 발표했던 앨범 「Hearts」에 이어, 그해 10월에는 자신들의 히트 곡 모음집인

  「History」를 발매하고, 1977년에 카우아이 군도에서 녹음한 앨범 「Harbor」는

   그들이 발표한 앨범 중에서 가장 큰 실패를 던져 준 앨범이 되었다.

 

   이 앨범의 실패에 대한 후유증이었는지는 모르지만, 댄 피크가 솔로로 전향하면서

   두명의 듀오 그룹으로 변신했다. 댄 피크가 솔로로 전향해 새로운 국면을 맞은 듀이 버넬과

 

   제리 버클리는 듀오로서 처음 발표한 앨범 「America Live」가 대히트를 기록하여,

   당면했던 위기를 잘 모면할 수 있었다.

 

 그 뒤로 별 활동이 없던 이 두 사람은 1980년에 자신들의 열번째 앨범 「Alibi」를

   발표하면서, 약 3년간에 걸쳐 지속되어 온 공백기를 깨고 새로운 스타일의 향수 어린

   사운드를 들려 주어 팬들을 기쁘게 하였다.

 

   1982년에는 11번째 앨범 「View From The Gronnd」를 발표하여 새로운 평가를

   받았는데, 이 앨범에 수록된 ＜You Can do Magic＞은 그들을 새롭게 평가하기에

   충분하리 만큼 좋은 결과를 던져 준 곡이었다.
