1970년 4월 9일 팀 해체를 선언한 폴 매카트니는 [Let It Be]가 발표된 날이기도 한 5월 23일동시에

 자신의 솔로 데뷔 앨범 [McCartney]를 내놓았다.

 

 이 앨범은 많은 우려에도 불구하고 미국 차트에서 3주간 정상을 지켰으며 2백만 장의 판매고를 올렸다.

그 해 10월부터 뉴욕에서 두 번째 앨범 레코딩 작업에 들어갔던 매카트니는 이듬해인 1971년 초 솔로 데뷔 싱글

''Another Day''로 돌아왔고, 몇 달 후 서포모어 앨범 [Ram]을 발표했다.

그 해 8월 3일에는 그의 새로운 밴드 윙스의 결성을 세상에 알렸다.

 비틀즈를 재현하고자 했던 커다란 야심에서 만든 윙스는 향후 10년 가까이 폴과 함께 했다. 윙스는 비록 비틀즈의

 위업에는 결코 미칠 수 없었지만 상업적인 측면에서 놀라운 성공을 거두었다.

 

 밴드의 오리지널 멤버로는 폴과 그의 아내 린다, 그리고 전 무디 블루스의 기타리스트 데니 레인(Denny Laine)과

드러머 데니 사이웰(Denny Seiwell) 등이 있었다.

매카트니와 윙스는 그 해 12월 첫 앨범 [Wildlife]를 발표했지만 비평가들로부터 차가운 냉대를 받았다.

그러나 헨리 맥컬러프를 영입해 팀을 재정비한 후 폴은 1972년 2월부터 영국의 여러 대학을 돌며 순회 공연에 주력했다.

 

드물게도 폴의 사회적 발언이 나타난 때였다. 강력한 정치적 메시지를 전하는 ''Give Ireland Back To The Irish''를

영국 차트 16위와 미국 차트 21위에 올려놓았고, 북아일랜드에서 작곡한 ''Bloody Sunday Massacre''는

 [BBC]로부터 방송 금지를 당하기도 했다.

 

한편 폴과 린다 부부는 8월 10일 스웨덴의 고텐부르크에서 마리화나 소지죄로 8백 파운드의 벌금을 물었고,

그들의 스코틀랜드 농장에서 다시 한번 소지 혐의로 체포되었다.

1973년 6월 2일 매카트니와 윙스가 발표한 앨범 [Red Rose Speedway]와 싱글 ''My Love''가 각각 미국 앨범과

 싱글 차트 1위를 기록했다. 영화 [007]에 쓰였던 ''Live And Let Die''는 영국 차트 9위에 랭크되었다.

 

 이듬해인 1974년 4월 매카트니는 윙스의 가장 큰 히트 앨범이 된 [Band on The Run]을 내놓았다.

이 음반은 비평가들로부터 극찬을 들은 매카트니의 첫 작품이었다. 상업적으로도 무려 6백만 장의 판매고를 획득했다.

싱글 ''Band on The Run'' 역시 빌보드 싱글 차트 1위에 올라 3주간 머물렀다.

 

매카트니와 윙스는 이 때부터 위풍당당하게 세계 순회 공연을 해나갔고, 발표하는 앨범과 싱글들을 속속 차트에

진입시키면서 가공할 만한 히트 행진을 이어갔다.
