John Denver

존 덴버의 본명은 존 헨리(John Henry)로,1943년 12월 31일에뉴 멕시코주에서 태어났다.

처음에는 피터 폴 앤 매리 에게＜Leaving on AJet Plane＞을 작곡해 주었고,

 (Rhythms And Reasons)로 가수의 자리에 섰다.

 

그리고 존 덴버의 이 곡은 두 장의 앨범에 발표되었는데 제일 먼저(An Evening With JohnDenver) 앨범과

또 하나는 그의 컨츄리 클래식 앨범에 발표되었다.

 

 '32세의 그는 미국의 가장 대중적인 가수'라고 <뉴스 위크>지가 1976년 공언한 대로 존 덴버는

전성기 시절 내내 '미국의 목소리'(The voice of America)로 통했다.

 

 그의 청량제 같은 노래들과 수더분한 '촌놈' 외모는 곧 1970년대 중반의 '미국 그 자체'였다.

그는 산을 사랑한 컨트리 보이 였다.

 

공군 조종사의 아들로존 헨리듀센도르프가 본명인 그는 로스앤젤레스에 가서 산이 많은 도시

덴버의 이름을 따 개명했다.

존 덴버의 길은 순탄하지만은 않았다.

1974년 여름 전미 차트 정상에 오른 '애니의 노래(Annie's song)' 이 곡은그가 캠퍼스 커플로

1967년 결혼한 아내 앤 마텔(Ann Martell)을위해 쓴 곡이었다.

 

그러나 불행히도 1980년대 들어서 존 덴버는 이 축복의 찬가를 부를 수 없게

되었다. 영원할 것만 같던 아내 앤 마텔과 1983년 갈라서고 말았다.

 

그후 음주운전,두 번째 아내인델라니와의 이혼등. 환경 운동에 나서고 기아 문제와 복지부문,

그리고 반전 활동에 아낌없이자신을 바쳤던, 모든 찬란한 순간이 빛을 잃어가는 순간이었다.

 

1982년 플라시도 도밍고와 '아마도 사랑은(Perhaps love)'을

 함께 부르며 건재를 과시했지만 주류에서는 이미 떨어져 있었다.

 

매우소박하고 순진한 가사로1970년대  컨트리 송을 전세계적인 음악 장르로 승화시킨

장본인 John Denver..그러나 그는1997년 경비행기 추락 사고로 생을 마감하게 된다.
