흑인 블루스 기타리스트 로버트 클레이는

1953년 8월 1일 조지아주 컬럼버스에서 태어났다.

 

이후 그는 워싱턴주 타코마로 이주해 음악에 정진했으며

오티스 러쉬, 버디 가이, 허버트 썸린,

알버트 콜린스 등의 팬이 되었다.

 

로버트는 이들의 음반을 접하며

전율할 감동을 맛보았고 기타를 잡게 되었다.

 

그는 고등학교 시절부터 친구들과 어울려

블루스 잼 세션 등을 하는 밴드를 조직했다.

 

이때 만난 인물이 베이스 주자 David Consins였다.

그는 데이빗과 함께 자신의 이름을 딴 로버트 클레이 밴드를 결성해

 

80년대 초부터 마이너 레이블에서 앨범활동을 하다가

86년에 앨범 [Strong Persuader]로
