매력적인 목소리를 자랑하는 메리 홉킨은 50년 5월 3일 영국에서 태어났다.

폴 매카트니의 추천으로 애플 레코드사와 계약을 맺은 그녀는

68년 첫 싱글 를 발표해 영국 차트 2위에 올려놓았다.  69년 첫 앨범 「Postcard」를 발매하였다.

71년에는 유명한 포크 록 그룹 스트라브스의 보컬리스트 데이브 커즌즈가 참여한 앨범

「Earth Song」을 발표했고, 같은 해에 메리 홉킨은 프로듀서 토니 비스콘티와 결혼식을 올렸다.

음악계 숨은 실력자인 토니 시스콘티는 영국 출신으로 조 카커, 티렉스, 젠틀 자이언트,

 신 리지, 데이비드 보위 등 록과 프로그레시브, 뉴 웨이브까지 넘나들며많은 뮤지션들의 앨범 제작에 참여한 인물이다.

결혼 후 공연 활동을 성공리에 마친 메리 홉킨은한동안 공백기를 가지며 가족과 함께 그 시간을 보냈다.

그러던 중 76년 영국차트 탑40 진입곡인 를 발표하며 팝음악계에 복귀했다.

그녀는 역시 영국 뮤지션으로 평소 친분이 두터웠던 데이비드 보위의 77년도 앨범「Low」의 백 보컬을 맡아 주기도

 했는가 하면 79년에는 자신의 앨범 「The Weish World Of Mary Hopkin」을 발매하였으나 저조한 반응을 보였다.

여성 보컬리스트로 70년대 초반을 장식했던 메리 홉킨은 청량항 음색으로 노래하여 맑고 상큼한 분위기로 인기를 받았다.

그러나 80년대로 접어들면서 그녀는 주목할 만한 활동을 전개하지 않았으며서서히 음악팬들의 기억속에서 사라져갔다.
