셰어(Cher)의 원래 이름은 셰리린(Cherilyn Sarkisian)으로 1946년 5월20일생이다.

셰어가 16세때인 1962년 11월에 LA에 있는 한 커피숍에서 소니 보노(Sonny Bono)를 처음 만났는데 이 때 소니의 나이는 27세로 첫번째 부인과 이혼한 직후였다.

 

많은 나이차이에도 이들은 급속히 친해져 친구에서 연인으로 그리고 부부가 되었다.

 

이들은 유명한 레코드 프로듀서이자 작곡가인 필 스펙터(Phil Spector)의 음반작업에 백업 보컬로 참여하게 되는데

 The Ronetts의 'Be My Baby', The Righteous Brothers의 'You've Lost That Loving Feeling'과 같은

유명한 곡들이 이 때 나온 곡들이다.

 

두 사람은 카이사르 & 클레오(Caesar & Cleo; 시저와 클레오파트라)란 이름으로 듀오를 결성하지만 주목을 받지

못하다가 소니 & 셰어로 이름을 바꾸고 1965년에 발표한 그들의 첫 앨범 'Look at Us'에 수록된

'I Got You Babe'가 빌보드 차트 1위에 오르면서 일약 유명해지게 된다.

1975년에 이들은 이혼하여 각기 독자적인 활동을 하지만 특히 셰어는 솔로가수, 작곡가, 레코드 프로듀서, TV와 영화배우로 성공을 이어가 아카데미 여우주연상, 에미상, 그래미상, 골든 그로브상을 수상하고 헐리우드의 명예의 거리에

 스타로 영원히 그 이름을 남기게 된다.

 

1998년 52세의 나이에 발표한 'Believe'는 전세계에 1,000만장 이상 팔린 가장 많이 팔린 댄스곡이란 기록을

수립하고 동시에 워너 브라더스 레코드 사상 가장 많이 팔린 곡으로 그 기록을 보유하고 있다.

그리고 셰어는 차트 1위에 오른 가장 나이 많은 여가수란 새로운 기록도 세우게 된다.

 

소니 보노는 정치에 나서 상원의원을 지내기도 했는데 1998년 스키사고로 인해 사망했다.

 그의 장례식에 셰어가 눈물로 애도하고 조문객들과 함께 부른 노래가 'The Beat Goes on'이다.

소니 보노의 묘비에는 "And The Beat Goes on."이라고 새겨져 있다 한다.

음악의 비트이기도 하지만 심장의 박동도 비트이니만큼 그는 음악과 함게 영원히 우리 곁에 살아 있다.

 Beatles도 Beat에서 나왔다는 설이 있지만 이 곡에서 하나 분명한 것은 코드 진행이 한가지 뿐이란 것이다.

 

C로 시작하면 C 와 C7 이 전부다. E이면 E와 E7이 전부다. 그런 단조로운 코드진행이지만 들어 보라.
얼마나 변화가 무상한지......그들의 히트곡 Bang Bang은 영화 킬빌의 배경음악으로 사용되기도 했다.
