70~80년대의 전설적인 맹인 아티스트 Stevie Wonder..
Stevie Wonder만큼 오랜 기간동안 지속적인 성공을 거둔 흑인 뮤지션도 찾아보기 힘들 것이다.

 

 1962년 불과 12살의 나이에 'Fingertips (Part 2)'로 세상을 놀라게 한 후

1984년 'I Just Called To Say I Love You'로 전세계적인 성공을 거둘 때까지

적어도 20년 이상 그는 최고의 흑인 뮤지션 자리를 놓치지 않았다.

 

 

 

스티비 원더만큼 오랜 기간동안 지속적인 성공을 거둔 흑인 뮤지션도 찾아보기 힘들 것이다.  1962년 불과 12살의 나이에 'Fingertips (Part 2)'로 세상을 놀라게 한 후 1984년  'I Just Called To Say I Love You'로 전세계적인 성공을 거둘 때까지 적어도 20년 이상 그는 최고의 흑인 뮤지션  자리를 놓치지 않았다.   그는 또한 많은 동료 가수들에게 곡을 써준 유능한 작곡가였고, 거의 모든 악기의 연주를 직접 맡을 정도로 재능있는 멀티플레이어였다. 뿐만 아니라 신서사이저와 스튜디오 테크놀로지를 적극적으로 개척한 사운드의 혁신가인 동시에  정치적으로는 비폭력을 내세운 평화주의자였다. 어쩌면 선천적인 시력장애가 그에 대한 온당한 평가를 가로막을 정도로 그는 흑인 음악의 역사에서 돋보이는 존재이다. 스티비 원더는 1950년 미시간주에서 태어났다. 어려서부터 신동으로 재능을 떨친 그는 초기 모타운의 간판 그룹이었던 미러클스(Miracles)의 로니 화이트 (Ronnie White)의 눈에 띄어 모타운 사장인 베리 고디 주니어(Berry Gordy Jr.)에게 소개되었다. 앞서 말한 'Fingertips (Part 2)'는 그의 세 번째 싱글로 이 곡이 빌보드 팝 차트의 정상을 차지하면서 그는 일약 모타운의 희망으로 떠오르게 되었다.  이어 60년대 동안 그는 수많은 싱글 히트곡을 냈는데, 'Up-Tight', 'I Was Made to Love Her',  'For once in My Life', 'Shoo-Be-Doo-BeDoo-Da-Day' 등이 이 시기를 대표하는 곡들이다. 한편 그는 밥 딜런의  'Blowing in the Wind'(1966)와 'A Place in the Sun'(1968)을 다시 불러 히트하는가 하면, 60년대 후반에는  펑키한 곡 외에 'My Cherie Amour', 'Yester-Me, Yester-You, Yesterday' 등의 발라드 곡으로 음악적 영역을  넓혔다. 1970년대가 되면서 그는 소속 음반사인 모타운의 상업적 정책에 회의를 품기 시작했다. 앨범 [Signed,  Sealed & Delivered](1970)에서 그는 사회에 대한 발언과 더불어 전자음에 대한 실험에 관심을 가졌다.    그리고 이듬해 그는 자신의 음악에 대한 통제권을 둘러싸고 모타운과 재계약 협상을 했다. 그 결과 음반사는 그에게 전적인 창조의 자유를 보장했고, 이어 [Where I'm Coming From](1971)과 [Music of My Mind](1972)가 나왔다.   이 앨범들은 몇 곡의 히트 싱글과 땜질용 곡의 모음이 아니라 그의 뮤지션으로서의 비전이 투여된 앨범이라는 점에서 진정한 그의 앨범의 시작으로 평가받는다. 특히 [Music of My Mind]는 가스펠과 재즈를 비롯하여 아프리카, 라틴의 리듬을 도입했으며 무그 신서사이저 음색으로 대표되는 새로운 그의 스타일을 확립했다는 점에서 중요한 의미를 갖는다. 1972년 10월에 발표된 [Talking Book]은 명실상부한 그의 대표작이다. 수록곡인 'Superstition'과 'You Are the Sunshine of My Life'는 싱글 차트 정상을 차례로 밟았고,  'Tuesday Heartbreak', 'Looking For Another Pure Love' 등 당시 일년만에 끝난 그의 결혼생활을 반영이라도  하듯 사랑과 이별에 관한 곡들이 많았다. 1973년에는 또 다른 걸작 앨범 [Innervisions]가 나왔다.   흑인들의 게토에서의 삶을 그린 'Higher Ground'와 'Living for the City'에서 알 수 있듯이 이는 그의 앨범 가운데  가장 정치적인 색이 부각된 앨범이었다. 이 무렵 그는 동료 흑인 뮤지션들뿐만 아니라 제프 벡(Jeff Beck), 조지 벤슨(George Benson), 밥 말리 (Bob Marley) 등 여러 뮤지션들과 서로 영향을 주고 받았다.   [Fulfillingness' First Finale](1974)에 수록된 'Boogie on Reggae Woman'은 바로 밥 말리의 영향이 강하게 드러난 레게 넘버였다. 또한 데니스 윌리엄스(Deniece Williams), 잭슨 파이브(The Jackson 5), 미니 리퍼튼 (Minnie Riperton) 등이 백보컬로 참여하여 이 앨범을 빛내주었다.   스티비 원더의 계속된 성공은 1976년에 발표된 [Songs in the Key of Life]에서 절정에 달했다. 두 장으로 발표된 이 앨범은 14주간 차트 정상을 차지했으며, 'I Wish', 'Sir Duke' 역시 큰 히트를 기록했다.  [Talking Book]에서 [Songs in the Key of Life]까지 4년 동안 스티비 원더는 네 장의 앨범을 모두 밀리언셀러로 만들며 무려 15개의 그래미 트로피를 가져갔다.    당시 음악적으로나 상업적으로나 누구도 넘볼 수 없는 성공을 거두며 최고의 흑인 뮤지션으로 군림했다. 1979년 그의 디스코그래피에서 가장 이채로운 부분이 될 사운드트랙 앨범  [Journey Through the Secret Life of Plants]를 발표한데 이어, 이듬해 그는 초창기 스타일로 돌아간 [Hotter Than July]를 들고 나왔다. 'Master Blaster (Jammin')'는 여전히 차트에서 좋은 성적을 올렸고, 마틴 루터 킹 목사의 생일에 바친  'Happy Birthday'도 인기를 끌었다.   1980년대 초반 그는 앨범보다 싱글에 주력해 'That Girl', 'Do I Do'를 히트시켰으며, 특히 폴 매카트니와 함께 한  'Ebony and Ivory'(1982)로 엄청난 성공을 거두었다. 1985년에는 사운드트랙 [The Woman In Red]에 수록된 'I Just Called To Say I Love You'로 아카데미에서 최우수 영화 주제곡을 수상하는 한편, USA for Africa의 'We Are the World'에 참여했다. 특히 이 해에는 5년 만에  발표한 앨범 [In Square Circle]과 수록곡 'Part-Time Lover'가 히트하여 변함없는 그의 인기를 과시했다.  1986년에는 Dionne & Friends의 'That's What Friends Are For'에 참여했고, 이듬해 앨범 [Characters]가 이어졌다. 이렇듯 1980년대 그의 음악들은, 비록 음악적으로는 높은 평가를 받지 못했지만, 여전히 대중들의 호응을 얻었다. 1989년 그는 로큰롤 명예의 전당에 이름을 올렸는데, 이 무렵 그는 단순히 뮤지션일 뿐만 아니라 AIDS, 인종차별, 마약 등 사회문제와 장애인, 홈리스에 대해 대중들의 관심을 일깨우는 사회활동가로 많은 공헌을 했다.  1990년대에 그는 스파이크 리(Spike Lee)의 영화 [Jungle Fever]의 사운드트랙을 담당했고, 1995년에 나온  [Conversation Peace]는 지금까지 그의 가장 최근의 정규앨범으로 남아있다.
