1973년에 미국 플로리다주의 덴버시에서 결성된 아우트로우스(Outlaws)는, 당시 여러 록 밴드에서

활동하던 후지 토머슨(Hughie Tomasson)과 빌리 존스(Billy Jones)를 중심으로 조직된 그룹으로,

유명무실해져 가는 서든 록(Southern Rock)의 명맥을 유지하여 오고 있는 그룹이기도 하다.

 

결성 당시의 이들은 올맨 브라더스(Allman Brothers)의 음악 스타일을 모방하면서 클럽 등지에서

연주 활동을 하였으며, 재즈(Jazz)와 컨츄리 그리고 강렬한 헤비 록을 적절히 가미시켜서 데뷰 앨범 「Outlaws」를 아리스타(Arista) 레코드사를 통해 발표했다. 그렇지만 올맨 브라더스 음악의 모방이

뚜렷히 드러나 대중들로부터 외면을 당했다.

데뷰 앨범의 실패는 이들에게 새로운 방향을 제시해 준 계기가 되었으며, 그때부터 아우트로우스는

몇 차례에 걸쳐 멤버 교체를 했다. 그러한 멤버 교체는 이들의 사운드에 변화를 가져 오게 하였으며,

점차적으로 강한 남부의 록에서 부드러운 록으로 전환시켜 나갔다.

 

한 때 모방색이 짙어 대중들로부터 외면을 당했던 아우트로우스는 완전한 사운드의 변화를 이루고,

후(Who)나 롤링스톤즈(Rolling Stones) 등의 거물 그룹들의 오프닝 그룹으로 활약하면서,

1980년까지 세장의 앨범을 발표했다.

그러나, 아우트로우스가 대중에게 크게 어필된 것은 1980년 후반에 발표한 네번째 앨범

「Ghost Riders」가 히트하면서부터이다.

 

특히, 이 앨범에서 싱글 커트된 ＜(Ghost) Riders In The Sky＞가 국내 팝 팬들에게 자신들을

알리는 결정적인 곡이 되었는데, 이곡은 1949년에 본 몬로(Vaughn Monroe)가 처음 불렀던

웨스턴 송으로, 그 이후에도 라틴 밴드인 바야 마림바 밴드로 불렀으며, 1970년대에 들어서는

컨츄리 가수인 쟈니 캐쉬(Johnny Cash) 등 수많은 가수들이 불러왔던 곡이다.
