캐나다 출신 밴드인 Nickelback은 상당히(?) 상업적인 음악을 만듭니다.

 해서 이 밴드의 앨범은 두고 두고 들을만한 앨범은 아니지만, 단기간 듣기에는 상당히 좋은 트랙들로 앨범을 채우고

 있습니다.

 2008년 앨범인 Dark Horse 앨범도 이러한 기대를 충족시켜주는 앨범 이예요.  

Creed의 캐나다 버젼이라는 혹평도 있었지만 Creed가 세장의 앨범을 끝으로 사라진 반면,

Nickelback은 1996년 1집을 시작으로 지금까지도 왕성한 활동을 하고 있습니다. 

 

 

 

 

 

리드보컬인 Chad Kroeger가 양아버지로 부터 4,000달러를 빌려서 동생인 Mike Kroeger, 사촌인 Brandon

(현제 탈퇴), 친구인 Ryan Peake와 함께 1996년 캐나다 벤쿠버에서 결성한 밴드.

Chad Kroeger는 주로 가사 작업을, 나머지 맴버들은 곡 작업을 담당했다.

 

Nickelback 이라는 밴드명은 스타벅스에서 일한 경험이 있는 Mike Kroeger의 출납직원의 아이디어로

만들었다고 한다.

그들 음악의 첫 출발은 “Hesher” 라는 타이틀이 붙여진 7곡이 담긴 데모음반과 함께 시작, 1997년 첫 데뷔

CD “Curb”를 발표함과 동시에 쉴 틈 없는 공연에 돌입하였다.

 

수 많은 드러머들이 거쳐간 끝에 Ryan Peake의 오랜 친구인 현재의 드러머 Ryan Vikedal를 만나게 되고

1999년에 EMI사에서 두 번째 CD, "The State"를 내놓게 된다.

이 음반은 미국에서 2000년에 발매되었다.

그들은 캐나다에서 Creed, Silverchair, Everclear와 같은 밴드들과 쉴 틈 없는 공연을 펼쳤으나 미국 무대에 서기를

희망했다.

그리하여 그들의 세 번째 앨범 “Silver Side Up”과 첫 싱글 “How You Remind Me”가 미국 남부에서 큰 히트를

기록하는 위업을 달성하기에 이른다. “How You Remind Me”는 캐나다와 미국에서 록 챠트 1위를 석권하였다.

Chad Kroeger의 전직은 축구 잡지사의 직원이었다.

그가 14세 때 학교 시합에 나가기 위해 청소년홀에서 2달을 지냈었다고 한다.

사람들은 “Curb”, “The State”, “Silver Side Up” 세 개의 CD가 담긴 세트를 3면체 동전이라고 부른다.

Rock의 정상에 선 그들, Nickelback은 이렇게 말한다.

“우리는 사람들이 노래를 부를 때나 거리를 걸으며 음악을 들을 때, 그들 곁에서 함께 할 아름다운 노래와 멜로디를

 만들어내는 일을 기쁨으로 생각한다.”
