the last rose of summer

 

Tis the last rose of summer
Left blooming alone;
All her lovely companions
Are faded and gone:
No flower of her kindred,
No rose-bud is nigh,
To reflect back her blushes,
Or give sigh for sigh.

I'll not leave thee, thou lone one!
To pine on the stem;
Since the lovely are sleeping,
Go, sleep thou with them.
Thus kindly I scatter
Thy leaves o'er the bed,
Where thy mates of the garden
Lie scentless and dead.

So soon may I follow,
When friendships decay,
And from Love's shining circle
The gems drop away.
When true hearts lie wither'd,
And fond ones are flown,
Oh! who would inhabit
This bleak world alone?.

 

여름철 마지막 한 떨기 장미가
홀로 꽃 피운 채 남아 있답니다.
꽃밭에 같이 피워있던 고운 꽃들은 모두
시들고 사라졌지요.
지금은 비슷한 꽃이나
장미꽃 봉우리마저도 가까이에 없기에,
그 빨간 꽃잎 색깔이 비치지도 않고
맞대고 한숨도 짖지 못한답니다.

그대, 외딴 장미꽃, 나는 그대를 버리지 않겠어요!
버리면 그 꽃자루가 애타게 그립겠지요:
고운 꽃들은 꽃잎을 오므리고 잠들었으니
그대도 가서 그들과 함께 잠드셔요
나는 이렇게 즐거운 마음으로
그대의 잎을 나의 잠자리에 뿌려 놓습니다.
그 자리엔 같이 꽃피던 그대의 꽃밭 친구들이
향기도 사라지고, 시들은 채 깔려 있답니다.

나도 되도록 빨리 그대를 따라가렵니다
우정은 시들어 떨어지고
사랑하는 이의 반짝이는 머리 비녀에서
보석이 떨어져 나갈 때에…
진솔한 마음은 희미하게 식어가고
다정한 마음이 자취를 감출 때에…
아 ! 그 어느 누가 살아가겠습니까?
홀로 이 적막한 세상에서…
