데프 레파드(Def Leppard)의 화려하면서도 풍부한 선율의 메틀과,
브루스 스프링스턴(Bruce Springsteen)의 거칠고 반항적인 감성을 혼재한 듯한 그룹
본 조비(Bon Jovi)는 뉴저지를 기반으로  한 팝 메틀 밴드이다.

그룹의 간판 스타인 존 본 조비(Jon Bon Jovi, vocal)의 이름을 그룹 명칭으로 사용하고 있는 이들은
존, 데이빗 러쉬봄(David Rushbaum, keyboards), 알렉 존 서치(Alec John Such, bass),
티코 토레스(Tico Torres, drum), 리치 샘보라(Richie Sambora, guitar)의 5인조 그룹 으로
82년 결성되었다.

뉴욕의 라디오 방송국인 WAPT에서 주최한 아마추어 록 콘테스트에서 'Runaway'로 대 상을 받으며
이름을 알린 본 조비는 83년 폴리그램 산하 머큐리(Mercury)레이블과 계약을 체결하고
84년 셀프  타이틀의 첫 앨범을 발매한다.


이 앨범의 싱글 'She Don't Know Me', 'Runaway'가 히트하면서
화려하게 데뷔한 이들은 당시 [Eliminator]라는 대작을 터뜨린
지지 톱(ZZ Top)의 오프닝 밴드로 출연하게 되었으며,
그 결과 팬들의 뜨거운 사랑 을 받음과 동시에 앨범은 골드를 기록하게 된다.


이에 힘입어 화산 폭발시의 온도를 타이틀로 내건 2집 [7800 Degrees Fahrenheit]는,
평론 가들로부터 그들의 이미지와 헤비 록에 걸었던 기대에
훨씬 못 미치고 평범하기 그지없다는  혹평을 받긴 하지만,
'only Lonely', 'In & Out of Love'를 히트시키면서 순식간에 골드 를 기록하는
성과를 거두고 겨우 데뷔 2년째인 본 조비를 일약 스타덤에 오르게 한다.
