1960년대 세계의 최고 인기를 얻었던 그룹으로

존 레넌(John Lennon), 폴 메카트니(Paul Mccartney),

조지 해리슨(George Harrison), 링고 스타(Ringo Starr)

4명으로 구성되었지요.

 

 

이들은 모두 리버풀의 가난한 노동자 집안 출신으로,

비틀스 결성 이전에 다른 록 그룹에서 활동하다가

1956년, 레넌과 매카트니 2명이 먼저 멤버를 구성하고

 

1957년, 해리슨 등이 팜여함에 따라

1960년에 비틀스라는 그룹이 탄생합니다.

 

1962∼1963년, Please Please Me, I Want To Hold Your Hand,

Love Me Do 등의 음반을 발매하자 크게 히트,

영국 최고 인기의 록 그룹이 되지요.

 

 

또 비틀스의 음반은 미국에서도 대 선풍을 일으켜

'비틀스매니아'를 만들었고 '에드 설리번 쇼'에 출연하기도 했습니다.

 

이들은 상업적으로 성공, 경제력이 보장되자

(비틀스의 음반은 싱글·앨범 모두 100만 장 이상 팔림)

자유로운 음악 형식과 편곡을 시도, 발라드풍의 Yesterday.

 

복잡한 리듬의 Paperback Writer, 동요풍의 Yellow Submarine,

사회적 메시지를 담은 Eleaner Rigby 등 다양한 노래를 선보이지요.

 

1966년에 마지막 공연을 가진 비틀스는,

팬들의 지나친 관심에 대한 부담과

개인적인 관심의 차이로 1971년 해체되고 맙니다.

 

 

이들은 엘리자베스 2세로부터 대영제국 훈장을 받았으며,

해체 후 재결합이 일부에서 시도되었으나 뜻을 이루지 못한 채,

 

존 레넌이 1980년 뉴욕에서 암살되었고

해리슨은 2001년 11월 29일 사망했지요.

 

 

오늘은 800여년의 유구한 역사를 자랑하는

덴마크의 올레보르그 수도원과 버글럼 수도원의

실제 수사들이 그레고리안 성가의 목소리로 부른

감동적인 비틀즈의 노래를 들어 봅니다.
