1943년 7월 23일 LA의 Goodwill에서 태어난 토니 조 화이트(Tony Joe White)에게는 Cherokee의 피가

흐르고 있었다.

 

60년대 중반 그는 Texas의 클럽에서 일하기 시작했고1968년 Nashville로 이주하였다.
1969년 데뷔앨범 [Monument, Black and White]을 발표한 토니 조 화이트는 이 앨범에서 탑10 힛트를 기록했던

 "Polk Salad Annie"(69년 빌보드# 8위)와
차트에 올랐던 또다른 힛트곡 "Roosevelt and Ira Lee (Night of the Moccasin)"을 힛트시켰다.

같은 해에 Dusty Springfield가 이 앨범에 실린 곡 "Willie and Laura Mae Jones"로 차트에 올랐으며 또한

Brook Benton이 토니 조 화이트의 1970년도 힛트곡 "Rainy Night in Georgia"를 소울풍으로 커버하기도 하였는데,
이 곡은 100명 이상의 아티스트들에 의해 커버된 스탠다드곡이기도 하다.

토니 조 화이트는 "Groupie Girl" 로 1970년 영국 차트에 잠시 머무르며 유럽에서의 성공을 시작하였다.

유럽에서 그는 1970년에 있었던 역사적인 Isle of Wight Festival에서 성공적인 데뷔를 하며 믿을 수 없을 만큼의

 성공을 거두게 된다.

그의 열렬한 유럽팬들의 사랑은 거의 10년동안 계속되었다.
또한 당시 백인들 사이에도 흑인 음악의 전유물로만 여겼던 소울이 그들만의 전유물이 아니라는듯
백인소울 뮤지션들이 나타났는데 이때가 60년대 초반이다

"화이트 소울" 혹은 "블루아이드 소울" 이라 불렸던 일단의 백인 아티스트들 의 등장이 바로 그것인데 Blue Eyed soul 은 백인 뮤지션에 의해 불려지고 실연된 Soul과 R&B를 말한다이 용어는 Righteous Brothers같은 그룹이다

'You Lost That Loving Feeling' 같은 소울 스타일의 노래를 히트시켰을 때인 60년대 중반 처음 사용되었고
60년대 말을 거치면서, Rascals, Box Tops, Mitch Ryder, Roy Head 같은 뮤지션과 그룹들이 일련의 히트곡을 
내자 블루 아이드 소울은 번성하게 된다
