1984년 6월 23일 듀란 듀란의 The Reflex가 신디 로퍼를 밀어내고 빌보드 싱글 정상에 등극했다.

 리플렉스는 밴드가 가장 상업적으로 성공을 한 곡으로 그들의 모국인 영국에서 Is There Something I Should Know?에 이어두번째로 넘버원을 차지했던 싱글이었으며, 미국에서 정상에 올랐던 최초의 곡이다.

 

참고로 미국 빌보드 싱글 차트 정상을 차지했던 또 하나의 곡은 007 주제가였던 A view to kill이었다.

 원래 그들은 이곡을 첫 리드싱글로 내고 싶었지만 그들의 레이블인 EMI 측에서 상업성이 없다는 이유로 반대했다.

 그러나 결국 절치부심끝에 세번째이자 마지막 곡으로 채택되어 레이블의 기대와는 달리 초대박이 터진 것이다.

 

이곡이 수록된 Seven and the Ragged Tiger 앨범은 그들의 3번째 앨범으로 유일하게 영국에서 정상을 차지했던

 음반이었다.

 미국에서도 더블 플래티넘(2백만장)이상 팔려나갔고 전세계적으로 히트를 한 작품이었다.

 

이 앨범은 2004년 Astronaut 앨범 발매할때까지 오리지널 멤버들이 모여 내놓았던 마지막 작품이기도 하다.

 이 앨범을 내놓구 존 테일러와 앤디 테일러는 로버트 파머와 chic의 토니 톰슨, 버나드 에드워즈와 함께 더 파워 스테이션이라는실험그룹을 결성하여 Some like it hot이라든가 티렉스의 고전 Get it on을 히트시켰다.

1985년에 이르자 듀란 듀란의 열기는 점차 식기 시작했다.
특히 영화 007의 [A View to A Kill]의 타이틀 트랙 작업을 마치고 난 뒤부터 그룹엔 균열이 생기기 시작했다.
Andy와 John Taylor는 보컬리스트 Robert Palmer, 전 Chic의 드러머 Tony Thompson과 함께 수퍼 그룹 Power Station을 결성하고 그해 봄 탑 10 싱글 "Some Like It Hot", "Get It on (Bang a Gong)" 등을 배출시킨 데뷔 앨범을 발매하였다.
듀란 듀란의 나머지 멤버들인 Nick Rhodes, Simon LeBon, Roger Taylor도 이에 대한 대응으로 프로젝트 그룹인 Arcadia를 결성하고 1985년 앨범 [So Red the Rose]를 발표하여 히트 싱글 "Election Day"를 탄생시켰다.

1986년 Roger Taylor는 1년 동안 휴식기를 갖겠다고 발표하고 그룹을 떠났으나 이후 다시 돌아오지 않았다.
몇 달 뒤 Andy Taylor마저 탈퇴함으로써 5인조 그룹이었던 듀란 듀란은 트리오로 축소되었다.
1986년 말 밴드는 [Notorious]를 발매하는데, 거의 3년만에 선을 보인 앨범이었다.
이 앨범 역시 비교적 성공을 거두어 미국에서 플래티넘을 기록하고 타이틀 트랙이 탑 10 차트에 들긴 했지만, 이들의 초기 레코딩에는 훨씬 못 미치는 성적이었다.
이후 80년대가 끝날 때까지 듀란 듀란의 인기는 점점 기울어갈 뿐이었다.
