She ran distracted in grief and woe

영국의 포크락밴드 Steeleye Span (스틸아이 스펜)의 2집 앨범으로서, 초창기 전통 포크를 구사했던 음반입니다. Steeleye Span 은 잉글랜드 전통의 향기를 갈구하는 구도자 Ashley Hutchings (애슐리 헛칭스)가 Fairport Convention 을 탈퇴해 만든, 자기만의 음악성을 추구한 밴드 입니다. 전통포크를 연주했던 그들의 초기 3부작은 시대를 초월한 명작으로 인정받고 있습니다.

 

1970년 전후, 가장 뜨거운 시기에 돌입하는 록의 세계에 편승하여, 전통 영국음악도 진일보하는 기회를 맞이하게 됩니다. 포크기타와 피들(Fiddle)의 포맷에 덧붙여 일렉트릭 악기의 지원이 가세해, 대중에게 호소할 수 있는 환경이 완성되었던 것입니다. 일렉트릭 악기를 사용해 전통을 연주하는 시도에 중점을 둔 밴드가 바로 Steeleye Span입니다.

 

 2집인 [Please To See The King] 은 3집인 [Ten Man Mop, or Mr. Reservoir Butler Rides Again (1971)] 과 함께 중후한 맛의 사운드를 구사했던 음반입니다.  그것도 드럼레스로 장엄함이 뭔지를 보여주는 작품으로서, 멤버 전원에 의한 코러스웍이 소리의 틈새를 모두 메워 도망갈 길이 없는 듯한 꽉찬 사운드를 들려줍니다. 3집 이후로는 팝적인 사운드가 강한 포크락으로 변화되어 가지만 영국적인 음악을 뿌리 깊게 내린 대표밴드로서 지지를 받게 됩니다.
