Knockin' on Heaven's Door

 

 밥 딜런이 이 노래를 만들게 된 역사적 배경과

가사 속에 나오는 군인의 마음을 이해하고 들어야하는 노래입니다.

 

노래 가사는 월남전에 참전한 미군이 전쟁의 잔혹한 참상을 보면서

더이상 총으로 사람을 쏴 죽이고 싶지 않다고

처절한 심정으로 어머니에게 고백하는 슬픈 내용입니다.

 

따라서 가사 첫머리 ...

'Mama, take this badge off of me.'' 엄마 이 배지를 내게서 떼어 주세요 .' 는

'Mama, (I want to) take this badge off of me.' 이고 그 의미는

'엄마, 전 이 계급장(휘장)을 떼어 버리고 싶어요.'라고 해석하는 게 맞다고 봅니다.

 

 

원래 Bob Dylan이 불러서 노벨 문학상 후보로까지 거론되게  만들었던 노래지만 1990년대에 들어와 Guns N' Roses가 리메이크 해서 더큰 히트를 기록했죠.   1966년 미국 샌프란시스코를 중심으로 발원해서 점차 미국 대도시로 확산되면서 파리, 런던 등의 청년층에도 파급된 20세기 대표적인 청년문화 양식인 히피 문화가 다분히 내재된 이 곡에서 뱃지을 떼어    달라거나 총을 묻어 달라는 말은 전쟁에 대한 혐오와 거부를 말하는 것일테죠. 당시에 베트남 전쟁이 한창이었을 겁니다.     노래 제목으로 쓰인 '천국의 문을 두드리며'란  말의 일차적 의미는 죽음을 나타낸다고  생각되는데 당시의 혼란한 사회 속에서 갈 길을 잃고 헤매는 인간들의 심리적 정서를 대변하는  말인지도 모르겠습니다.   이 곡은 Sam Peckinpah 감독의 1973년 영화 <Pat Garrett & Billy The Kid> 사운드트랙 앨범에 처음 실렸는데 그 영화는 아직 보지 못했습니다.    그 후에 이 곡은 여러 영화에 자주 삽입되었는데 제목까지 곡명을  따서 만든 영화가 있었죠. 골수암과 뇌종양에 걸린 두 남자의 여정을 그린 1997년 독일 영화 <Knockin' on Heaven's Door>요.   영화의 전반적 분위기는 코미디였지만 그렇게도 가고 싶어하던  바닷가에 도착한 두 사람이 바다를 바라보다 쓰러지는 마지막 장면에서 이 곡이 장면과 꽤 잘 어울려서 흘러 나오더군요.
