"살다 보면 듣는 부정적인 이야기에 휩쓸리지 않고 자신감을 갖고 자신의 길을 가라는 메시지가 담긴 앨범입니다.

듣는 분들이 스스로 당당하고 용감한 사람이라는 사실을 깨달았으면 합니다."
지난 2월 정규 5집 앨범을 발표하고 9월 1일 내한공연을 하는 캐나다 펑크록 밴드 심플플랜(Simple Plan)은 29일 연합뉴스와 이메일 인터뷰에서 새 앨범에 담긴 메시지를 이같이 소개했다.

1999년 피에르 부비에(보컬), 척 코모(드럼), 데이비드 데로지에(베이스), 세바스티앙 르페브르(기타), 제프 스팅코

(리드기타) 등 멤버 5명으로 출발한 심플플랜은 17년째 단 한 명도 교체 없이 활동을 이어온 캐나다의 대표 밴드다.
2011년 펜타포트 록페스티벌 헤드라이너(간판 가수)로 출연하면서 국내에도 두터운 팬층을 확보한 심플플랜은 5년

 만에 서울 용산구 한남동 블루스퀘어 삼성카드홀에서 내한공연을 개최한다.

심플플랜에서 드럼을 맡는 척 코모는 이메일 인터뷰에서 5집 앨범 '테이킹 원 포 더 팀'(Taking one For The Team)에 대해 "두 가지 의미가 있다"고 소개했다.
'다른 사람을 위해 기꺼이 희생하다'라는 의미의 이 앨범 제목 자체는 팀을 유지하기 위한 멤버들의 희생과 노력을

것이지만 앨범 수록곡을 관통하는 메시지는 '자신감을 가져라'라는 것이다.

그는 "앨범 제목은 우리가 지금껏 유지한 밴드의 모토"라면서 "17년간 멤버들이 지금까지 함께한 것은 정말 자랑스러운 일이다. 밴드를 하기 전부터 친하게 지낸 20년 지기여서 가능한 일이 아니었나 싶다"고 술회했다.
그는 "문제가 있으면 항상 그 자리에서 풀려고 하고, 멤버들 간에 진솔한 대화를 하려고 노력했다.

가장 중요한 것은 멤버 모두가 밴드를 위해 무언가를 희생해 왔다는 사실이다. 무조건 밴드가 우선이고 그게 처음부터 지금까지 심플플랜을 유지해온 룰"이라고 팀워크의 비법을 밝혔다.
팀워크를 유지하기 위한 비법만큼이나 오랜 기간 고수한 음악 철학은 '마음으로 곡을 써서 진정성을 담자'는 것이다.

코모는 "우리는 항상 진정성 있게 우리의 모습을 담은 음악을 만들려고 한다. 또 올바른 이유를 갖고 음악을 하려고

한다"며 "그러려면 마음으로 곡을 써야 한다.

우리가 듣고 싶은, 우리가 사고 싶은 앨범을 만들려고 한다"고 강조했다.

"세월이 지나서 돌아볼 때 자랑스러운 앨범을 만들어내고 싶다"는 그는 이런 음악 철학을 갖고 한국 무대에 서겠다고

말했다.

그는 "10대 때부터 펑크록을 사랑한 우리가 매일 밤 무대 위에서 공연을 할 수 있다는 것 자체가 정말 멋진 일"이라며 "지난번 한국에 왔을 때는 다른 밴드와 함께하는 페스티벌이었지만, 이번은 단독 무대여서 좀 더 편한 마음으로

공연할 것 같다"고 덧붙였다.

그는 몇년 전 펜타포트 록페스티벌 공연 당시 한국 관객들의 에너지에 놀란 기억이 있어 이번 공연이 더욱 기대된다고 밝혔다.
그는 "지금까지 아시아 공연을 많이 했지만 한국 팬들은 정말 놀라웠다. 팬들의 성원에 보답하려고 우리도 최선 다했던 것 같다"고 말했다.

코모는 심플플랜을 잘 모르는 관객과 이미 심플플랜의 팬인 관객 모두를 만족시키는 공연이 되도록 예전 새 앨범 수록곡을 두루 선보일 계획이라고 밝혔다.
그는 "이번 공연은 심플플랜의 베스트 앨범 공연과도 같을 것"이라며 "기대해도 좋다"고 자신했다.

그는 한국 공연을 위해 멤버들이 신경 써서 컨디션을 관리하고 있다면서 "피에르는 최대한 목을 아끼려고 하고 나 예전보다 드럼을 더 열심히 치고 있다"고 귀띔했다.
그는 특히 에너지가 넘쳐나는 곡인 '붐'(Boom)과 최신 싱글인 '싱잉 인 더 레인'(Singing in the Rain)을 추천하면서 "팬들이 공연 전에 한번 듣고 와줬으면 좋겠다"고 당부했다.

한국 공연을 포함해 심플플랜의 모든 공연 티켓은 장당 1달러씩 밴드가 설립한 '심플플랜 파운데이션'에 기부된다.
기부금은 캐나다 적십자를 통해 재난 구호 등에 사용된다.

이에 대해 코모는 "어느 정도 성공을 이루니 주위에 베풀고 싶어졌다

팬들이 보내준 여러 사연이 담긴 팬레터를 받으며 직접적인 도움을 주고 싶다는 생각으로 시작했다"고 말했다.

그는 "조만간 후원금이 200만 달러를 달성할 전망이어서 너무 기쁘다"고 자랑한 뒤 "공연 티켓에서 1달러씩을

 모으는 것이어서 팬 분들이 직접 후원한다고 볼 수 있다"고 덧붙였다.
